Newport Folk Festival 2007

August 12, 2007

Bob Dylan and Joan Baez

Newport Folk Festival was founded in 1959.

– A famous launching stage for folk stars: Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Johny Cash among others.

Bob Dylan electric guitar story

– Bob Dylan was popular with the crowd in 1953, 1954.

– In 1965, he first played the acoustic guitar and got cheers. He later played the electric guitar and got booed, since the audience did not like folk music with electric guitar.

– Dylan promised “not to come back”

– However Dylan compromised his promise and came back in 2002 with his electric guitar. The audience liked him this time.

Newport Folk Festival 2007

– Opening evening with Linda Ronstadt on Friday, August 3, 2007 – 8pm to 11pm.

– Open-doors performance in Fort Adams state park on Saturday and Sunday. August 4 and 5, 2007 from 12pm to 5:30pm.

– I attended only the Friday and Saturday.

Thank you for the music

Grace Potter

– The music was very good. Newport Folk music now is different from the past though. More elements of Pop, Rock and Blues get in.

– I saw streams of Celtic, little blue grass, rock, blue and folk on Saturday performance.

– I am impressed with the protest song of the Nightwatchman. He had a very high opinion of the Bush administration.

– Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is very good. Grace Potter voice resembles that of Janis Joplin. The group is from Waitsfield, VT.

– Allman Brothers Band, a veteran band is very good.

Festival Organization

– This was the first time that I saw a grand outdoor concert.

– A wonderful diverse audience.

– Three outdoor stages in Fort Adams.

– The organization was great: parking lot, shuttle bus, performance list, bulletin, sales booths, promotional services, food stands..

– The first time beer and wine were allowed and the reminder “relax responsibly”

– Strong sponsorship of Dunkin Donut.
